That´s When Your Heart..."!

November erscheinen! Bin mal auf die ersten Reviews gespannt!

Hier die Meldung:

The long awaited project about Elvis’ first two years at the Memphis Recording Service (Sun Records) will be released on November 28, 2005.

The details from the press release:

"The Memphis Recording Service, Vol. 1" will contain a book, a 5.1 DVD audio CD and a vinyl 45 single. There will be a detailed book with exclusive new information, unseen documents and colour photos covering the humble beginnings of Elvis Presley's music career and its effects on the birth of Rock’n’Roll during 1953 -1954.

The 5.1 DVD Audio CD will contain 11 fully restored tracks from 1953-1954. All of them has been remastered using never before released original sources of masters, acetates and tapes to produce high quality sound never before heard. A selection of photographs is used to accompany each song.

Highlights Include: For the first time since 1954 we can hear That’s All Right in its true Sun sound without the fake RCA echo. This track has now finally been re-mastered from the original Sun Mother master straight to 5.1 Audio/ Dolby Digital sound. This original version has never before been re-released on record, CD or any digital disc until now.

Tracklist:

1. My Happiness
2. That's When Your Heartaches Begin
3. That's All Right
4. Blue Moon of Kentucky
5. Good Rockin' Tonight
6. I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine

First Louisiana Hayride Show 16th October 1954
7. Lucky Strike (Scotty and Bill tune up)
8. That's All Right
9. Blue Moon of Kentucky
10. Milkcow Blues Boogie
11. You're A Heartbreaker

That’s All Right 45 rpm single

Processed and pressed for the first time since 1954 from the original Sun master “Mother stamper”. The original Sun 209 45 rpm issue of That's All Right was Elvis Presley’s first commercial record. It was recorded on the 5th July 1954 at the Memphis Recording Service and was released later that month. In late 1955 That's All Right was re-released by RCA Records with an added echo effect on the vocal track. Subsequent re-issues of this song from 1955 to the present day have all contained that same echo effect, not faithful to the first Sun recording. If you have never been fortunate to own the original pressing and hear the sound as it was intended, here it is.

Through acquisition of the Sun’s master “Mother” - the part responsible for pressing the first run of records, we can present That’s All Right back in it’s original format with the same matrix number and three pushmarks. This will give all true Elvis fans an exclusive chance to experience the birth of Rock’n’Roll for themselves.

There has been much speculation about this release on various forums, everything from "I'm afraid it will be a homemade project...You know, Cool Edit Pro will do the job..." to "the memphis set is probably a con job.."
So, is it a homemade project? Not on your life!
The packaging is beautifully produced in a gatefold format , very much in the style of the FTD 7" releases.
As you open up the set, you see two colorized photos of Elvis from the Sun era,
open it up again and you presented with a forward by one of the worlds leading collectors, John Heath.
Then there is the 7" replica of the original "That's All Right" pressed from the mother stamper and looking very authentic, right down to the three push marks, slightly worn label and a plain brown paper sleeve (just like the original). The single is only one sided, which is good in the sense that at least some unscrupulous con-man won't be able to put it on e-bay for hundreds of pounds and try to pass it as an original, mint copy (see the 3 push marks!!).
In the centre of the package is the DVD-A with a replica of the Memphis Recording Service label and groove marks to give the look of a vinyl record.
The DVD Audio disc can only be used on DVD players and DVD-Rom drives and in order to produce optimum sound, all the tracks have been remastered and designed for 5.1 DVD audio. But if you don't have a 5.1 sound system, then the disc will play in Dolby Digital sound. A nice touch when playing the DVD-A is that unlike the "ELV1S - 30 #1 Hits" DVD-A, there is a menu screen and you actually get pictures of Elvis on your screen while each song plays.
I am no expert on sound comparison but even I can notice a difference on these tracks, so here I will list the tracks for you and give a short description.

01. My Happiness
02. That's When Your Heartaches Begin
Both these tracks have been remastered from the original transfer tapes with full co-operation from Ed Leek and a little treat for collectors is that "Heartaches" includes the guitar strum intro which was omitted on the BMG release.
03. That's All Right
This is without question a far better sound than any of the RCA or BMG releases.
The real Sun sound as it was intended to be heard by every fan.
04. Blue Moon of Kentucky
This has been remastered direct from an original Sun 78 rpm record.
05. Good Rockin' Tonight
This track is the only one (to my ears) that is not an improvement on the BMG release. This track has also been remastered direct from an original Sun 78 rpm
record.
06. I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine
WOW! this track is streets ahead of the BMG release, the sound is fantastic and has been remastered directly from the original Bobcat tape which was the Sun master tape.

07. Lucky Strike Advert (Scotty & Bill tune up)
08. That's All Right
09. Blue Moon of Kentucky
Not another Hayride recording? No it's not, this is Elvis' first ever Louisiana Hayride appearance, on October 16th 1954 and it is in wonderful sound quality and mastered from the original Louisiana Hayride tapes direct from the Hayrides archives.

10. Milkcow Blues Boogie
This has been remastered direct from an original Sun 78 rpm record.

11. You're A Heartbreaker
This has been remastered direct from an original Sun 78 rpm record.

All in all, the sound on this release is an improvement on the BMG releases and a very welcome addition to an already flooded market. A nice touch is that the DSD transfer was carried out in the city where it all started, Memphis, Tennessee.
It's a shame that "I'll Never Stand In Your Way" and "It Wouldn't Be The Same Without You" is not included but as these are owned by BMG, copyright clearance was an impossibility.

Next is the book, not a booklet as suggested by some sources, this is a 100 page (total) book. Loads of photos covering 1953 and 1954 and some very rare pictures indeed. Tons of rare newspaper cuttings from the period, contracts and even Elvis' very first Sun contract.

The book takes you on a journey of the birth of Rock n Roll and is well written by Joseph Pirzada and John Heath. There are a few typos in the book which shines a bad light on the designer but these can be forgiven for the excellent content that this book and indeed the whole set delivers.

The price of almost £30.00 does seem a little over priced but looking at what you get, it's not really that bad in all. If these were released individually, the vinyl Sun disc would cost you around £5.00, the DVD-A disc would cost around £10.00 and the book would be around £10.00 add the beautiful packaging and you have a set that is worth the money. Plus at least we now know that the guys at M.R.S. have not just copied tracks from other releases like so many of the Sun stuff out now.
This has really been done professionally and has produced a great set with a great sound.

What about the rest of the Sun story? Well the folks at M.R.S. state that this will continue in Volume 2 (1955) The Rise of Elvis Presley which promises even more never before seen documents and pictures, a DVD and a 45rpm vinyl replica of Elvis' last Sun release, "Mystery Train".

One thing is certain, if they can produce a set like Volume 1 then the next release will be a must have for all fans.
