Elvis has been sighted in Hollywood! Well, his star, anyway--freshly refurbished and unveiled today at a ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It was an early present for fans worried about having a B-b-blue Christmas because the King was suffering the indignity of a a chipped and worn sidewalk memorial.
Before unveiling the star, Honorary Hollywood Mayor Johnny Grant read a note from Lisa Marie Presley: "Thank you very much for the prompt action in having my father's star restored...I know he would be deeply appreciative."
A small crowd of fans were, too. "We came here from South Dakota for his 10th birthday," said Linda Kuehn pointing to a beaming Wes Johnson and clutching a star map. "I asked him, 'Who do you wanna see?' and he said, 'Elvis.' This is a nice surprise."
The polished star consists of the original brass nameplate and record nested in a brand new pink terrazzo. Flanked by Ray Charles and 1960s animal documentarian Bill Burrud, it rests at the corner of Hollywood and Highland, a block from the Chinese Theater. The repairs were made Thursday after a crew installed Jack Nicholson's star.
Elvis' star was among the first 1,558 installed February 9, 1960. However, neither the King nor any of the other luminaries were present since the formal unveiling ceremonies didn't start until the mid-1970s.
Like many of the surrounding stars, Elvis' has been victimized by age, earthquakes, tree roots, millions of shoes (blue suede and otherwise), ground sinkage due to subway construction and the occasional over-zealous, spade-wielding fan who wanted to take a piece of the King home.
Today's ceremony kicks off a massive restoration campaign for the entire Walk of Fame, Grant said. So far the Hollywood Historic Trust has earmarked $100,000 for the project. To help fund repairs, cracked stars will be crushed and sold as "Star Dust" and bigger chunks will be set in lucite squares as paperweights. Fans clubs can also adopt a star.
Although Elvis missed both unveilings of his star, don't be surprised if the King stops by later to check it out. "I assure you," said Grant, "that if you wait around today, Elvis will be back to look at his star. I channeled him last night and he promised."
