Here we go again hot on the heals of Vol. 5, or should have been if not for a disc error on the first pressing, which added a six week delay on it’s release, but it’s here now and that’s what matters..
This time we are treated to a few little gems, for the fans that want every take even the false starts no matter how short, as Volume 6 fills in a fair few gaps in our collections, as usual the sound on most previously released takes have been improved upon from there original outings, most notably from the opening show of January 26th 1970, the version of “True Love Travels On A Gravel Road & Kentucky Rain” are outstanding in comparison to the two bootleg releases of a few years ago.

The CD starts with two ‘56 Classics “Lawdy Miss Clawdy & Shake Rattle & Roll” track 2. is the Single Master without the overdubs, so its more of a raw studio recording but the sound is crisp and clear and a joy to the ears. As described in the sleeve notes “Blue Berry Hill – take 8” is from the re-discovers Binaural “Safety” Master tape, let’s just hope these tapes have the complete sessions.

An interesting radio clip from Toronto, Canada 57 recorded at the Maple Leaf Gardens, you get to hear the commentator talking over the crowd screaming but you could not hear Elvis he describes the atmosphere in the auditorium but then as he mentions Elvis’ showstopper “Hound Dog” you can just hear him above the screams of the fans, pure energy must have been electrifying.

Three vocal overdub free masters from the movie “Kissin’ Cousins” are also included, and it just goes to show, you don’t need to fool with the basic recordings. This is followed by takes 2,3 of “So Close, Yet So Far From Paradise” take 2 is no more than an intro, but take 3 is complete and this is probably the best song from the movie, Elvis dose a reasonable job on this take and even gets praise from the booth upon completion of the take.

A couple false starts for “Stay Away” are hear but too short to say much about, except that these fill the missing gaps in this session, but we do get a complete guitar overdub of his first take, to stretch it out the song.

But the main highlight of the CD has to be “Don’t Cry Daddy” rehearsal from the 4th August 1970, this version is done in a similar style to the version on “The Brightest Star On Sunset Boulevard” release, although that time it was just Elvis & the band, this time The Imperials & The Sweet Inspirations were on hand too, Elvis is singing it for there benefit to hear his new version of the song with new lyrics.

By now most fans will know that this has come directly from some out-take footage that has just recently escaped from someone’s vault, also from these out-takes but from “On Tour” this time there is a presentation at the Vegas Hilton in August where Elvis receives a Gold award for the “Madison Square Garden LP” & and as a bonus a Gold single award for “Don’t Cry Daddy”. It’s just a shame you can’t see what preceded this award, but that will all come to light soon enough on other reviews. The CD rounds off with some improved Soundboard recordings again in Binaural, a couple tracks from Charlotte, North Carolina 20th March 1976 and “Love Letters” from Birmingham, Alabama, December 29th 1976. And finally the last track a radio ad for the Movie “This Is Elvis”. As usual the art work with this release is stunning, some great photos of memorabilia related to the tracks included on the CD and printed on top quality card, and almost worth the price for this alone. Was it worth the wait,… hell yes, lets just hope Volume 7 won’t be too long behind, and that we start seeing some of this material in a little more complete format either complete session or concert…
