ELVIS PRESLEY
17.3.1956
Elvis Presley, who has sky-rocketed to fame during the last year belongs more in the rock and roll school but as much country music is influenced by R & B, many readers will be interested in his first LP which includes Blue Suede Shoes, l‘m Counting On You, I GotA Woman, One-Sided Love Affair, I Love You Because, and Just Because, on one side and Tutti Frutti, Trying To Get To You, Im Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry Over You, III Never Let You Go, Blue Moon and Money Honey.

LOVE ME TENDER / ANY WAY YOU WANT ME
19.9.1956
Elvis Presley offers something different on every release, a factor which should keep his popularity at a peak for a lang time, if mentor Tom Parker maintains this pacing. On "Tender", from his forthcoming first flicker for 2Oth CenturyFox, he reveals again his intimate, warm style to great advantage. The reverse shows an entirely new Presley, singing all out in a good ballad style. This side shows what Presley can do when he chucks the gimmicks and just sings.

lT‘S NOW OR NEVER
16.7.1960
Elvis‘ second release since his return to our shores should easily duplicate his Stuck On You - Fame And Fortune success. Slightly different tor Presley is the top side, lt‘s Now Or Never. A new lyric (Tony Martin had There‘s No Tomorrow) cha cha adaptation af 0 Sole Mio. The other end, A Mess Of Blues, is a rhythmic fingersnapper from the famous Presley hip-swinging school. Great musical and vocal (the Jordanaires) support on both smasheroos.

ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT / I GOTTA KNOW
12.11.1960
Both ends of this newie-oldie combination can quickly duplicate Pres‘ current chart-topping success, lt‘s Now Or Never. The newcomer, I Gotta Know finds the changer grooving a teen delighter from the rock-a-cha-cha school. The standby Are You Lonesome Tonight receives the warm, smooth, slow ballad treatment (with an effective mid-deck recitation). The Jordainaires again grab grade ‘A‘ backdrop credits.

This amazing Elvis, currently riding high with the EP trom his Kid Gallahad pic offers another pair of pic tunes (from the soon-due Girls! Girls! WHAT‘D I SAY / VIVA LAS VEGAS
9.5.1964
Once again a Presley deck hits the wax mart and, once again, it means money-in-the-bank tor all concerned. Both sides are in Elvis‘ latest flick, Viva Las Vegas, and both should be on their way in no time flat. One end, featuring the Jordanaires, is the pic‘s title tune that sports the excitement of that fabulous city. The other‘s the sizzling revival of the Ray Charles classic, What‘d I Say that has the Jubilee Four & The Lombard Qt. colorfully assisting.

FROM MEMPHIS TO VEGAS / FROM VEGAS TO MEMPHIS
15.11.1969
A blockbuster double packet set from the guy who started it all. The first two sides catch Elvis in a truly exciting in person performance at Las Vegas‘ International Hotel, aided ably by the Imperial Quartet and the Sweet Inspirations. Great renditions of recent smashes In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds as well as a bunch of his trademark items appear in this segment of the package. Sides 3 and 4, recorded in Memphis studio, feature mellow Elvis stylings on ten tunes. Should be top ten soon.

ON STAGE, FEBRUARY 1970
13.6.1970
Elvis continues right on with another live set, this time from his engagement at the International Hotel in Vegas. The King ‘sounds‘ relaxed and happy as he swings into excellent versions of PoIk Salad Annie, Yesterday, and Proud Mary. With Presley in top voice and fine non-overpowering sounds coming from the orchestra, one could ask for little more. Disc is already seeing chart action.

RAGS TO RICHES / WHERE DID THEY GO LORD
6.3.1971
Powerful lyric from Elvis shows him simmering with an old fashioned selection of particular brilliance. Solid sample for MOR as well as top 40 play in the semi-spiritual Where Did They Go Lord. Also in fine acceptance is the remodeling of Tony Bennet‘s oldie Rags To Riches which is added by a complementary treatment.

Here ‘tis the newest from the King. As the title might indicate, this is a collection of ballads, with several uptempo numbers thrown in for good measure. Familiar fare such as Silver Bells, Winter Wonderland and 0 Come All Ye Faithful is joined by such items as On A Snowy Christmas Night and If I Get Home On Christmas Day. Pardon the pun, but this is a very touching album. Elvis is one of today‘s major musical forces, commanding an audience with wide latitude as well as large numbers. He is an incredible focal point for the masses, and when he directs his energies into inspirational music, it is truly inspirational. Especially care can be found in Amazing Grace, I John, An Evening Prayer, Bosom Of Abraham (his new single) and the title tune.

ELVIS AS RECORDED AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
1.7.1972
lt was one of the toughest tickets of the year. And one of the toughest concerts too. Yes, after a decade and a half at the top, Elvis finally makes it to New York and this is the rush-released recording of the event. OId Elvis, new Elvis and everything in between - thats what can be found in the grooves here. Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, and other hit singles go hand in hand with first rate interpretations of such contemporary favorites as Never Been To Spain and Proud Mary. lT‘S A MATTER OF TIME

His Burning Love LP set a precedent for a budget album selling like wildfire. This is the successor to that trendsetter; lt‘s titled after Elvis current charter, and also contains its flip, Always On My Mind. They set the tone for a generally ballad oriented pop/country outing. The oldies included are capped by the original recording of his great version of Old Shep. ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE
10.2.1973
Why, you might ask, has Elvis Presley been able to sustain these many years as the ‘King?‘ The answer is quite simple; take a two-sided record set like this one that already has advance order of over 500,00 copies even before the release date. Add to it the fact that Elvis always gives his audience more than a mere 100%; consider the fact that this quad package contains eight new songs never before recorded; it all adds up to one thing - when you‘re number one, there‘s a reason! This new Presley - pak was recorded live at the Honolulu Int'l center on Jan. 14, and it could easily become Presley‘s biggest selling album to date.

Another two-sided Elvis smash with one the Pop outing (Sleep) and the other a country delight. Sleep is a funky disk with a solid rhythm section and a great blusey vocal fronting all. lt should make considerable noise shortly. Help Me is a strong country track featuring a vocal up to the task and instrumentation as a perfect complement. Either way, either side, this is Elvis at his best, so don‘t miss out.

ELVIS AS RECORDED LIVE ON STAGE IN MEMPHIS
6.7.1974
The picturesque cover of Elvis‘s stately Memphis mansion deceptive, for the energy contained in the LP is every bit as overwhelming as it was 17 years ago. Performing before his ‘home‘ fans (thought he was born in Tupelo, Miss), Elvis steps into the classics See See Rider, I Got A Woman, Long Tal! Sally, Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog, and Blueberry Hill with powerful authority and in many cases evokes memories of those great days when he first performed them. When Elvis released a single. one can never teil which of the two sides will be a hit. His musical talent and the longevity he has enjoyed throughout the years makes all of his material sought after. In this case lt‘s Midnight is a tender ballad that concerns the question of love. A very powerful number. Promised Land is a funky up-tempo rocker that will pick up stations immediately. lt is only appropriate that the two billionth disc to roll out RCA‘s pressing plants was a copy of Elvis‘ latest album. Recorded live in various locations, the record, pressed in moody blue vinyl is an up-too-date representation of Presley‘s stage act, with the King singing some well-known numbers as well as some new pieces. His version of the Righteous Brothers old Unchained Melody reaches some great high spots. For country and top 40 playlists.

ELVIS IN CONCERT
15.10.1977
Of all the Elvis albums, this one especially captures the King just as he was in some of his final performing moments. The King is here a man, who forgets his lines but ad hibs with humor and gives his all to the crowds that flocked to his shows wherever he appeared. Comments from the fans and a few touching words from his father, Vernon, make this album, taken from the CBS TV Special and a June 1977 tour, more than a collector‘s item, more correctly a piece of music history.

MY WAY
12.11.1977
This song has been performed by a great many singers, but it took on special significance when television audiences recently saw it performed by Elvis Presley. Already heavily programmed as an album cut from the Elvis In Concert LP, this single will certainly find a home on playlists of many formats. Flip: America.
Reviews are printed as they originally appeared in Cash Box magazine. As you will notice, some B-Sides are mistakenly noted as A-Sides.
